You rely on your refrigerator and freezer every single day. It keeps your drinks cold, allows you to store leftovers, and gives you the opportunity for delicious desserts at night. The last thing you want to do is grab your favorite ice cream and realize it has melted because the freezer isn't cold enough. Not freezing properly is one of many problems you might experience with your refrigerator. To avoid this and other repairs, maintaining the refrigerator on a regular basis is the best thing you can do. Here are some tips for taking good care of your refrigerator.
Keep the Condenser Coils Clean
The condenser coils are one of the most important elements to your refrigerator. They help it stay cold and when they aren't working properly, will raise your energy bill since they have to work harder. The best way to avoid this is by keeping them clean. If they have dust or build-up, your refrigerator works harder to stay cold and will have problems sooner than expected. The condenser coils are either behind your refrigerator or underneath it, depending on your type of fridge. Clean them every few months with a broom or vacuum, which helps to remove the dust.
Clean the Drip Pan
Your refrigerator also has a drip pan where excessive condensation ends up. The condensation goes from your refrigerator, through a drain hole, and then lands in the drip pan. This is also important to keep clean, because if it gets filled up or the drain hole is clogged, the condensation can cause any number of problems with your refrigerator. Every few months, take out the drain pan and empty it. Scrub the drain pan thoroughly and set it aside to dry. Find the drain hole underneath your fridge that leads to the pan and remove any mineral deposits or food particles you find.
Check the Gaskets
Your refrigerator also has gaskets that helps to keep the warm air out and cold air in. They provide a seal between the refrigerator and freezer door and the air outside of the refrigerator. You will find the gaskets on the edge of the door when you open it. Routinely check these gaskets and make sure they are strong and still sealing properly. Look for any cracks or areas that show wear and tear. They might need to be able to replaced if there is damage. If they can be removed easily, that is a problem, because they should be sturdy.
Replace the Water Filter
If your refrigerator has a water dispenser and/or ice maker, there is a water filter that needs to be replaced about once or twice a year. Your owner's manual will tell you exactly how often to replace it. It also gives detailed instructions on finding it and replacing it properly. This should be a simple job to replace it for you.
